PostSubject: Edolie Holcombe's Story   Edolie Holcombe's Story I_icon_minitime26th March 2010, 15:51

Ed’s Youth:

Edolie Holcombe was born in 1983 in small rural town close to London. Her mother was a muggle nanny who left her father when they were young. He moved Edolie and her twin brother, Roslin, out to the country and began a Dangerous Beast Rehabilitation Center. He would rehabilitate injured or orphaned beasts and then release them into reserves or where ever he was told he could release them. When Edolie and her brother weren’t attending a Muggle school in the Muggle area near by, they were normally helping her father care for the beasts (which Roslin loathed).

Age Eight:

It was a lovely sunny day after a night of wicked storms. Roslin had refused to go home to help with the beasts just yet and Edolie didn’t want to show up with him, so she and her best friend, James (a Muggle), made their way to a creek where they liked to play. Because of the rain the night before, it was much deeper and wilder than they had ever seen it. Edolie, having been very much a tom boy at that time and not much of a stickler for the rules, climbed out onto a tree that had fallen over the creek. She made her way across the tree and stood on the other side, goading James to walk across as well.

James was not at all like Edolie. Where she was brave and loved adventure, he was quite cowardly and preferred to stand on the side lines where he could safely watch others have great adventures.

“Come on James! You’re such a whimp! How did I ever become friends with such a ninny?” Edolie yelled playfully.

After much more of this, James finally obliged her and climbed onto the fallen tree. He made his way slowly toward Edolie, shaking more and more with each step, until a piece of bark broke under his foot, causing him to fall into the flooded creek. Edolie cried out and jumped in after him, but was pulled into an under tow herself. After being tousled around in that under tow for what seemed like ages, Edolie was about to give up and was sure that she would die. However, she suddenly hit bottom and was able to propel herself to the surface by kicking off the bottom of the creek. By this time some older students had stopped by the creek and saw Edolie come up. The fished her out and she told them, best as she could under the circumstances about James. He was found drowned several hours later.

From that day forward, Edolie would never be the same.

Age Eleven (1994):

Three years passed since the tragic death of Edolie’s best friend. The outgoing tom boy had become mousey, quiet, and very rule abiding over night. Her father finally had to pull her out of the Muggle school and home school her until she was eleven. She spent her days helping him heal dangerous beasts, learning arithmetics, reading, history, and the like. Receiving her letter from Hogwarts and finally being able to get away from the place that haunted her every day of her life was a huge relief for Edolie.

Hogwarts years:

From the moment that Edolie walked into Hogwarts, she tried her best to be invisible to the other students and to simply concentrate on her school work. She was sorted into Ravenclaw and went through six of the school years being known to other students as a shy overachiever. Some thought her snobbish and cold for her lack of interest in socializing, even though she was nothing but kind, while others embraced her for who she was (becoming the few friends that she had). She was made a Prefect to the surprise of no one, thus got a bit more of a lime light than she wanted, but people still had the same basic notion about her.

Concerning Voldemort: Edolie was a forth year when the famous battle at Hogwarts ensued and was shuffled out through the Room of Requirement and into the Hogshead in Hogsmeade with all other students who were too young to fight.

It wasn’t until her seventh year (2000) that things got a bit hairy for Edolie. She had been made Head Girl, her studies had become over whelming and she had fallen in love.

One night, Edolie wandered into the Forbidden Forest in the middle of the night after glimpsing something odd from the tower window of her dormitory. Although, during all her time at Hogwarts, she had been very smart and one to follow the rules, her curiosity got the better of her. Edolie threw on a pair of slippers, a robe, grabbed her wand and snuck out into the forest.

Upon entering the forest, Edolie found a path. Her original mission forgotten, Edolie followed it in the hopes of spotting one of the many beasts rumored to dwell in the forest. There was obviously something ahead, but the appearance of a student (whom Edolie had originally followed out there) put her back on track. This student displayed powers that no normal witch would have, but the appearance of an Acromantula got in Edolie's way of finding out what she really was. The other student told Edolie to get back to the castle and disappeared to keep the Acromantula from devouring the other student so that she could keep her place at Hogwarts.

On her way out of the forest Edolie ran into another of the dangerous creatures that dwelt in the forest, a Satiminoseus. It hypnotize Edolie, forcing her to recall her worst memory (the drowning of James), thus making her nearly helpless. Katherine heard Edolie cry out as she recalled the death of her best childhood friend and went to check on her. She distracted the Satiminoseus (which can not hynotize vampires or werewolves). Edolie's knowledge of the creature that she gained from reading books made it possible for her to kill it, thus saving the other student's life. During the battle with the Satiminoseus, Edolie figured out that the other student was a vampire.

Later on in her seventh year:

Edolie got to know a young man name Malachai Constant. He confided in her and told her that he was a vampire. After he told her that he was a vampire, Edolie wanted to ask him questions about what it was like. Her knowledge on vampires all came from books and the brief time that she had spent with that female vampire in the Forbidden Forest earlier that year. She and Malachai went out to a secluded part of the court yard where they would not be over heard by other students to talk. Unfortunately, Edolie had forgotten that she was to meet up with her boyfriend.
Her boyfriend, Jake Alexander, found the two and became very suspicious. Instant dislike for Constant filled Jake. Only a few days later, things go much worse for Ed and Jake...

The forbidden corridor - it seemed the only place where Jake and Edolie could find any peace to just spend some time alone. Being a prefect there was always someone looking for him and even more so with Edolie since she'd become head girl.

He entered slowly, glancing around to make sure there were no students or professors around before taking several steps toward the lantern closest the door. The only problem with this particular corridor was the dinginess. The windows for some reason didn't allow any light into the corridor. Withdrawing his wand he aimed at the wick and lit the small candle held inside the lantern casing. He watched as the shiver of light grew steadily brighter as the flame took and turned, holding the lantern aloft to find a cozy spot for himself and Edolie.

Edolie heaved her nearly bursting pack up to her dorm room and set it down on her desk. She looked at it longingly and pictured all of the unfinished homework that was nestled inside, but knew that taking it with her would not be a good idea. Things between Jake and her had been a bit rocky as of late. They had little free time to spend together to begin with and then being made Head Girl tacked right onto that made that precious time even less. She tore her eyes from the pack and swiftly made her way out of her dorm room, through the common room, and into the corridors. Being very much unlike herself, she shrugged people off when they tried to speak with her. Even a first year that had lost his way got nothing more than a vague wave in a general direction.

After what seemed like ages, she finally made it to the Forbidden Corridor and quietly made her way down it. This particular corridor had always made Edolie feel weary, not to mention the fact that it was forbidden. But when it came to Jake, she was willing to take the risk and get over her long time and irrational fear of the corridor. She stopped when Jake came into view and absentmindedly leaned against the wall, taking the time to enjoy the sight of him in the soft light of the lantern that he held.

Jake's focus fell - almost immediately - on a secretive little corner hidden in shadow. Shining the feint light on the spot he found it a proper nest of coziness, as if it was regularly occupied by lazing students. He placed the lantern securely on the ground but froze suddenly as he got the overwhelming feeling that he was being watched. He glanced around the corridor, his eyes falling on the radiance of Edolie several moments later as she stood watching him and he smiled. 'I was wondering if you'd show up.' He said warmly, the pressure of school work and responsibilities hadn't afforded them much time to grow as a couple and he'd started to feel anxious about losing Edolie, his heart wound in a tight knot at the thought each time.

A small smile quirked Edolie’s lips when Jake spoke. He had no idea what just the sound of his voice did to her. Alas, deep down she felt extremely horrible about the fact that those words could ever be spoken in regards to their relationship. She knew that he said them lightly, however, her always reeling mind wouldn't let go of her past mistakes. Edolie pushed the feeling of guilt aside, determined to enjoy every second that she had with Jake.

An array of possible responses ran through her mind, but every one of them seemed mundane and worn-out. She silently watched him for a moment longer and then gave up and gently pushed off the wall to make her way toward him. As she walked, Edolie had to work to keep her breathing steady, felt her cheeks burn, and thought herself very juvenile because Jake still made her body react in such a way.

As Head Boy, Mal was granted special privileges, one of those being the ability to be out of his common room after normal hours. One reason was to patrol the hallways for any other students out where and when they shouldn't be, and that was what he was doing this evening.

He had just topped the stairs to the third floor when he saw Edolie pass by him so quickly she neglected to see him. As she was his counterpart as Head Girl, she had as much right to be roaming the halls as he did, but where was she going in such a hurry? In order to make sure everything was alright he started to follow her. His vampiric sight made it so that he didn't need any of the lumos spells to see where he was going in the dark, and he had a tendency to move very quietly, so she probably had no sense that she was being followed, especially at the rate she was moving.

As he caught up, Mal saw Edolie turn and go down the forbidden corridor. This surprised him as even they weren't allowed to venture down that hall. But his curiosity was now truly piqued, and instead of finding a professor he decided to investigate for himself,

Mal slowly made his way down the hallway, he could see the light of a lantern getting brighter. He had almost rounded the corner when he heard voices and stopped himself. He heard not only Edolie's voice but that of a young man. He assumed it was probably the smug Mr. Alexander he had met just a few days before. As he settled in to listen to the conversation for a bit, he felt something nudge his leg, which caused him to give out a small yelp and drop his wand. He looked down and was greeted by the bright red eyes of Mrs, Norris, Filch's mangy cat walking down the corridor, which probably meant Filch was not far behind. Mal's only concern at this point was that he hadn't been heard by the other two, All he could do at this point was sit and wait.

Jake stopped fussing abruptly, looking in the direction of a small noise he'd heard. His hand immediately went out to retrieve his wand from his pocket and he aimed it in the direction of the sound. He straightened himself and took a few steps toward Edolie, moving in between her and the sound. 'Who's there?' He demanded of the darkness, keeping his eyes focused on everything and nothing.

The distinct sound of wood hitting stone caused Edolie to jump is surprise. She covered her mouth to stifle a gasp and looked out into the darkness wearily. When Jake moved between her and the darkness, Edolie gathered her wits about her and drew up closely behind him. She pulled out her wand, held her breath and peered around Jake as she awaited a reply.

"Shit!!!" Mal muttered to himself as he realized he had been found out. "Accio Wand!" Mal felt a bit safer with his wand in his hand.

He rounded the final corner and stepped into the light...."Well what do we have here?" Mal almost purred. "Ms. Holcomb, I can understand you being out at this hour, but I think it's past Mr. Alexander's bed time" becoming more confident he continued as he let his wand relax a bit "you can point your wands elsewhere, I mean you no harm. I was merely curious as to where my counterpart here was off to in such a hurry, and when I saw her run down the Forbidden corridor, well I thought something may be wrong"

Edolie let out the breath she had been holding and smiled with relief as she tucked her wand back into her robes and moved out from behind Jake. "Malachai, thank goodness! I thought...well, I don't know who I thought you were, but I'm glad you're you," she said in a voice a bit higher than she usually used and then wrinkled her nose at her own words. She shook it off and said, "We decided to meet here to...talk." Her cheeks began to burn in embarrassment, but she stammered onward, "With so much school work and our duties to the school, we haven't had much time to spend together." Highly annoyed with herself, Edolie closed her eyes and sighed deeply before trying to will the awkward situation gone when she opened her eyes again. With much disappointment and no surprise at all, she opened her eyes to find the situation still very much there.

When Jake realized the intruder was Malachai he felt his insides squirm. 'It's just the bug.' He mumbled, slightly lowering his wand but not stowing it away. He couldn't quite understand Edolie's like for Malachai but he knew Malachai couldn't be trusted. Something about him had always made Jake feel uncomfortable - the kind of uncomfort that comes with those you knew had something to hide... 'If you don't mind we'd like to be alone.' He said shortly, half demanding Malachai's departure.

Mal raised his eyebrows and lifted his wand once more " The Bug!!?! you'd be wise to watch your tongue around me Mr. Alexander, I'm not one to be trifled with" Mal flashed a smile that was filled with fangs. What Jake said had inflamed him. He half considered having a chat with Roslin about the whereabouts of his sister during the middle of the night. But he wasn't mad at Edolie so he wouldn't deliberately get her into trouble.

Edolie heaved a great sigh, buried her face in her hands and grumbled something about men and their gift for making a situation worse than it had to be. She lowered her hands a took a deep breath, "There is no need for such harsh words," she said, eyeing Jake specifically. Malachai was right, he was not one to be trifled with, but Jake didn't know that and she had sworn not to tell him. However, if it came to his safety, she'd be willing to divulge, but avoiding both was preferred.

Jake smiled spitefully. 'I guess this would be a good time then to advise you, Constant, to watch your tone. One doesn't need to be a freak to be dangerous.' He said angrily, his grip tightening on his wand. 'You will find me apt enough to deal with the likes of you.' He added, glancing at Edolie. 'Or shall I just leave you two alone?' His tone was cold and distant, he'd had quite enough of Malachai and his never-ending presence.

Jake's words drew out a quick and soft gasp from Edolie. She stared at him, eyes wide with shock and her mouth slightly open. Disbelief wore off and was closely followed by hurt and even more quickly by anger. Edolie stood up straighter, crossed her arms, and glared at the wall closest to her. After a time, when she was sure that she could keep the tears from spilling forth, she lifted her chin and said, "Please do," with out looking back at him. Even as she said it, she was sure that she would regret her words, but, at that point, she didn’t care in the least.

Jake looked more fully at Edolie, narrowing his eyes in a cold glare before he looked back at Malachai. His breathing heavy in his anger that seemed unable to fade. ‘Suit yourself.’ He said icily, his face blanking slightly. He aimed his wand at the setup he’d arranged for Edolie and himself and swished it vaguely, watching it all disappear as he sent it to his dormitory. He smiled spitefully though his eyes remained angry and headed out of the corridor to the staircase, pushing roughly past Malachai as he exited.

Edolie watched Jake go with a heavy heart, but her pride and anger kept her from going after him. Long after he was out of sight, she finally tore her eyes from the corridor and leaned against the wall. Humiliation flooded through her, only adding to her pain and anger. "I'm sorry about that," she whispered as she studied her feet. She wanted to make excuses for Jake, to clear whatever image Malachai now had of him, but she couldn't come up with anything that would do so.

((Powerplay ok'd by Kat))

As Jake pushed past, Mal muttered something under his breath which sounded almost like "Impedimento" which caused Jakes shoelaces to tie to each other. A fact which Jake was unaware of until he reached the stairs and fell face first after the first step. Mal hearing this off in the distance let a small grin creep to his lips. He then turned to address Edolie "It's alright my friend, I have become used to such bullies over the years. Especially once I became what I am' He then looked concerned "I am very sorry if our little squabble offended you". Mal considered Edolie a friend, and even though she had questionable taste in men, he still wasn't out to offend her.

Shaking her head slowly, Edolie said, "Don't be sorry. It wasn't your fault. Your reason for following me was noble and it's nice to know that you care. Jake was blinded to that. Once he gets an idea in that head of his, he can't let it go...no matter how ridiculous." She lapsed into silence and started to pick at an imaginary string on the cuff of her sleeve.

Despite how horrible she felt at that moment, she couldn't help but marvel at the turn of events. A night filled with promise of romance turned to a night full of harsh words and anger. Her own words suddenly slapped her in the face and she was sure that Jake would never speak to her again. "I can't believe I said that to him..." she muttered, mostly to herself.

Mal shook his head "Mr. Alexander will come around , and his anger will fade" he extended a hand to Edolie. "Come let's get we out of here, even in our position, we're still not supposed to be back here" He turned and pulled out his wand "Lumos" and no sooner had he spoken but a small glow appeared at the end of his wand.

Edolie took the hand Malachai offered without reservation and hoped desperately that he was right about Jake. Only her family was more important to her than Jake and, after having him in her life, she didn't know what she would do without him. "Yeah, we shouldn’t be here. I don’t even know why Jake and I decided to meet here of all places. Surely there’s a better place in this massive castle…” She sighed heavily and wished that there was a way to just forget what had happened.

Despite what had just happened between Jake, Malachai, and herself, she couldn’t help but smile in reply to Malachai’s comment about the Room of Requirement. Her smile turned a bit sad as he stopped and went on. She looked him in the eyes and whispered, “Thank you, Malachai. Your friendship means a lot to me too. You are an amazing person and friend. People like you are hard to come by.” Edolie sighed again and leaned her head against Mal’s shoulder. “It wasn’t your fault…you shouldn’t feel bad,” she added as she stared at nothing in particular.

" I am very pleased to hear you say that Ms. Holcomb" Mal replied to Ed as they continued up the corridor to another set of stairs. " In my particular situation, not many are willing to be my friend. Especially after they find out what I am" He could feel the sadness in her over what had taken place earlier, he put his arm around her to comfort her. "You mustn't let him upset you so, what happened tonight was brought about by choices he made based on HIS paranoia." at this, mal turned and looked Edolie directly in the eye. "You are a dear and sweet woman, and he is less of a man for the way he treated you"

Malachai’s words made that need to defend Jake spring forth again. "He wasn't completely without cause. You have to admit that finding us the way he did the day we met would have made anyone suspicious...especially since I was supposed to be meeting him. I thought that he knew me better than that though." She sighed again, this time with frustration. “Give me a complex equation and consider it solved. Ask me to figure out another human being and I couldn’t do it to save my life. This relationship stuff is far too complicated for me. It’s probably best that this happened now anyway. We need to concentrate on our studies.”

"Perhaps our first meeting was a bit suspicious" Mal began thoughtfully. "But at the same time a confident man would have stopped and asked rational questions rather than spoiling for a fight, and calling names."

Mal felt sadness for the girl, and what Jake was putting her through "Edolie, relationships are hard indeed, I understand, having a few myself. However giving up after just one fight is not the best track to take." Mal looked her in the eye again and said "wait for him to cool down, and stop being angry, then try to have a rational conversation with him. If he is willing to talk, he is willing to try to make it work. If not, then I'd say he's not worth your time."

Edolie smiled sheepishly and said, "That wasn't exactly our first fight...but your right, I shouldn't give up so easily. It's just that...well, I feel like I'm failing miserably. No matter what I do, it doesn't seem to be right." Her mind wandered to the only other time that she had ever failed to grasp something, except that had been her only childhood friend's hand as he was swept away. She tried to shake off the feelings of remorse and guilt, but she knew that it would stick with her until she could burry herself in lessons the next day, only to have the memory return later when she could no longer keep her mind busy.

It was just after midnight on a full moon and Malachai Constant was on the hunt. The vampire had chased a young girl from town into the forest, how he loved to hunt his prey in nature. He had caught the scent of her and began moving in her direction 'All too easy' he thought to himself as he began to close on his prey. He could smell her fear on the air, he would have her and be back in the castle on his rounds before anyone knew he was gone. He stopped for a moment, he sensed another nearby, still human but not his prey. He began to feel as though he was being watched. He took out his wand ready to defend himself."Come out and play whoever you are!" he called out to the gathering darkness. He turned suddenly as he heard the sound of branches breaking behind him.

At times it seemed disturbing what anger and hatred could make a person do, wandering the forest had seemed the only thing that quieted Jake after his last meeting with Edolie and Malachai. He knew there would be heartbreak, but his anger was still too raw to feel anything but hatred. His hatred appeared to stem from an undying source and he knew that as long as Malachai was present he would always feel it. Like a dark blanket wrapped around his heart, smothering it until all Jake could do was lash out.

He walked steadily through the forest, weaving between the trees in the semi-darkness, the moon providing more than enough light. Though he hadn’t found anything in the forest that would warrant it, his wand was drawn. There was a moment when he thought he’d heard something, a girl. But the sound passed him by too quickly for him to discern where it had come from or if there was any real danger. Girls were given to exaggeration.

He kept moving, winding deeper and deeper into the forest until on a convenient co-incidence he caught sight of something up ahead, through the trees he spotted what seemed to be a man. Quietly Jake moved forward, not creeping, merely keeping his silence about him, until he could see more clearly. His heart hardening instantly when he recognized Malachai. Jake pressed his lips together, even in the forest there was no escaping Malachai.

“Come out and play whoever you are!" – Malachai

Laughing shortly at the audacity of Malachai, alone in the forest and demanding actions from unseen forces, Jake shook his head. It was typical of the Atrums, their attitude toward everything was the same. Annoying as all hell and arrogant to the point of swallowing their big ass heads in. Jake noisily made his way into the small clearing where Malachai stood. ‘There’s just no escaping you, is there?’ He said with a bite in his tone. ‘You’re like a virus, you start in one point and then you’re just everywhere…’ He settled himself against a nearby tree, leaning with his shoulder and crossing his arms. ‘What you never seem to realize is how unwanted you are.’

Mal watched as the boy came into the clearing, he listened to his angry stupid words. Many of the same angry stupid words he heard from mortals and muggles alike all his life.Words no longer bothered him, what did bother him was that he was being interrupted while hunting. The bother would soon turn to anger, then to full on blood rage, and Mal couldn't afford to let that happen here.

"Mr. Alexander" his words mildly sardonic "How nice to see you again. I see your manners have not improved, however you'll have to do much better than that to upset me. You see I've been dealing with your kind for my entire life. Those too stupid to understand what they see, or too ignorant or afraid to care"

Mal had to hurry he was quickly losing the scent of his meal. I would love to continue this little tet a tet with you, however you did stumble upon me in the middle of something so I'll bid you good evening for now."

Mal turned and began to head off in the direction of his prey...

Jake could feel his anger rising at just the sound of Malachai's voice, his words not really making a difference to the emotion, just the annoying drone... When Malachai turned away from him it only added to the anger, infuriating Jake more. 'Don't turn your back on me, Constant!' He yelled, raising his wand, his body going rigid in his fury. Without saying a word he cast his spell, the thought echoing in his mind. Incarcerous.

Mal felt the ropes start to wrap around him before he knew what was going on. "Alright I've had just about enough of these games" he thought to himself. He shouted "Evanesco!" and the ropes disappeared. He turned to address Jake once again "Oh you stupid, stupid boy, you have no idea what you are starting, but you're about to find out" a smile forming on his lips revealing all his fangs. "Expelliarmus!" he called out. His smile broadened as he saw Jakes wand fly out of his hand.

"Petrificus totalus!" Came another spell from the vampire, he then began to move carefully towards the boy to make sure his spell had worked. All the time going over in his head all the ways he was going to make him pay for his misstep.

There could be no explanation for Malachai's speed, Jake lost a second after which he found himself wandless and frozen, stiff as a board. The only part of him able to move... his eyes. His mind willed his limbs to move, though nothing happened, his muscles completely inanimate as Jake stared up at the sky through the scattered tree tops. With a suddenly thought at how stupid he was being Jake enjoyed the fact that he had mastered wandless magic.

Finite. The spell was undone. Though it was a lot more simple without a wand there was always that lingering want of a wand, probably had something to with stability and in some cases more accurate spell casting. As quickly as he could Jake sat up, his mind racing to the first spell that came to mind, Sectumsempra, he knew the ramification of the spell but with a mind so heated in rage he didn't care. It was less than Malachai deserved.

A cut opened on Mal's face, a few drops of blood trickled out and down his cheek, but almost as quickly as it had opened it was closed again. Now due to lack of feeding, and his growing anger, blood rage was beginning to take over, the beast within was fighting it's way out.

With no concern for what may happen he raised his wand and screamed "CRUCIO!" he channeled all of his anger and his years of hatred into this spell. he would drive Alexander mad if he could. But after watching him writhe in pain for a few moments Mal was able to take control of himself again and he released the spell.

He stood over the young man "Come come now Mr. Alexander, let us quit thes e games before someone, really gets hurt."

Jake stared in astonishment as his spell took effect but the cut it caused healed up. It was an immediate effect, the fact hitting Jake with a force he couldn't explain. Not human. The wind was physically knocked out of Jack with the knowledge afforded him - Jake could see the difference in Malachai, he couldn't know what Malachai was, but there was a beast-like hungry look in his eyes.

"CRUCIO!"

Immediate excruciating pain, like Jake had never felt before. As if his body was trying to implode and explode at the same time. The pain running deep into his very veins, no relief even when he screamed in pain. He lay breathless where he'd fallen, staring up at Malachai blankly. For the few sacred moments after the worst pain had subsided Jake could think of nothing except the release, but Malachai spoke up again.

Slowly and painfully Jake got to his feet, not making a sound until he stood facing Malachai, his eyes darkening again as emotion flooded back to him. 'You think I'm afraid of a little pain?' He asked venomously, glaring at Malachai. Before he'd finished the question he'd had his spell in his mind, he gathered all his will power to him, keeping in mind the one spell he knew worked against most creatures, he felt his chest rising and falling with his breathing, but was aware of nothing except the one thought, incendio.

Edolie had decided that a breath of fresh air might do her some good, so she made her way out to the Black Lake. She chose a tree that would give her descent cover and tucked herself between it's roots. Only then did she finally let her tears fall. "It's just as it should be," she whispered to herself as she watched the swimming reflection of the moon on the water. "Both of us need to concentrate on our studies, worry about our future careers. Being in a relationship now is just foolish." she continued to tell herself, but her own words only made the tears fall quicker. Edolie quickly began wiping at her tears with the end of her sleeves, trying desperately to stifle them.

It was right about then when a horrible noise broke the silence of the night. Edolie froze until the scream of agony died away and could only sit there in shock for a moment. Something within her called out for her to rise, so she did. She gazed at the forest, trying to place the scream to some sort of beast that might live there, but it was undeniably human. Edolie started to go for her wand, but she looked down to find that it was already in her hand. “Right…let’s go see about this then,” she said to herself. Welcoming something to do besides sit around feeling sorry for herself, she started to make her way toward the forest.

Mal felt the flames begin to lick his skin, at first he welcomed the heat, then it became explosive pain, his skin and clothes began to char, his hair began to smolder and burn, calmly he stilled himself and produced a spell with his mind "Aquamenti!" he cried out in pain. A jet of water spit from the end of his wand and began to put out the fire.

With the fire out Mal's blood lust was stronger than ever, in order for his body to heal itself he'd need blood soon....and lots of it. He felt his strength leaving him and the world began to go out of focus. His knees finally gave out on him, and he fell to the ground barely able to breathe. He hurt all over from the burns of the fire, his skin began to tighten on his bones.

He used his mind to send out a message to the only person he could think of for help..."Katherine, help me! I'm dying!"

Seated comfortably in the Atrum common room Kat reveled in the warmth from the small fire that had sprung to life only moments ago. The heat was almost a relief to her in the deathly cold that always seemed to grip her, though she didn't really feel the cold... not as much as mortals did. For a moment she felt that old sadness pressing down on her again, never be the same again. Never be one of them.

Her mind was ripped from the thought by a sudden voice in her mind. She recognized it as that of Malachai. She was on her feet before the conscious decision gripped her, a dark frown sharpening her features as she tried to pinpoint Malachai, sending out her mind gift, scanning the school for any sign of him, but nothing came back. Gathering her willpower she sent out the mind gift again, scanning the forest.

Malachai lay in pain on the forest floor, she knew he wasn't alone but she couldn't make out who was with Malachai or what they were supposed to be doing in the forest. She knew there had been fire, one of the most deadly foes of vampires, once your skin ignited it was almost impossible to extinguish the flames, though she knew Malachai wasn't still burning she knew he had been burnt. Kat's breath left her as a panic started to set in and she ran from the common room, entering the forest only moments later and heading in the direction of Malachai.

Jake grinned with pleasure, letting a freakish laughter escape him as he watched Malachai sink to the floor. Finally! Something that got to Malachai. It was something of a miracle, too bad there was no one to share his joy with him. He walked over to the hunching figure and kicked him hard in the ribs. 'Who's the weakling now, huh?' He said scathingly, placing both his hands on Malachai's side to roll him over and see the damage his spell had done. Who'da thought fire would work so well? 'What're you gunna do now, freak?'

Another scream met Edolie's ears, only this time it seemed to have been an actual word. The scream was followed by an odd sort of sound, something like laughter, but it made Edolie's blood run cold. She tried to speed up, but the trees and bushes seemed to reach out to tear at her hair, skin, and clothing; constantly trying to hinder her.

As Jake rolled Mal over, only one thought permeated the vampire's brain 'must feed!!'

"What're you gunna do now, freak?"-Jake

Mal did the only thing he could think of, he reached up with what little strength he had left and grabbed Jake by the throat, he pulled the boy to him in a swift movement, and buried his fangs in the boys face, trying to get blood wherever he could. In doing so he took a chunk out of the boys left cheek. His blood was sweet, raging with hormones, Mal craved more, so he bit next into his neck. Drawing the warm sweet blood in gulps. He was not going to kill this boy however. No...Jake was going to live to pay for what he had done.

His strength slowly returning but still badly burned...he pushed Jake off the top of him,and using his mind to cloud and confuse Jakes, he stood up. As he stood pain racked his body. What Mal wanted to do, was to escape back to his dorm room and sleep for several days, but there would be time for that soon enough.

Mal walked slowly to where Jakes was laying on the ground, he began kicking the boy hard in the ribs hearing a few of them break as he did. Next he moved to Jakes legs, "so you like to kick people huh?" he asked as he stood on both of Jakes knees applying pressure until he felt a satisfactory little pop from each one signifying breaking of bones. Mal had intended to break both of his arms as well, but his strength was leaving him, and once again he fell to the ground. With one last burst of energy to save himself until help arrived, he yelled out"stuipfy" and Jake became still.

Jake felt his body crumble when Malachai’s hands wrapped around his throat. Surprise and shock gripping him completely so that for a moment he couldn’t react – until he felt the searing pain in his face, feeling his flesh being torn away. He gasped, but before any more could come from him Malachai had locked himself to Jake’s throat. As Jake listened to the swallowing noise coming from Malachai he reached up trying to push Malachai away from him but to no avail. His body feeling heavy and separate from him, Jake was pushed away from Malachai to roll over onto the forest floor, limb and unable to do anything as Malachai continued his attack.

With each kick Jake felt his body would explode and disintegrate as the pain shot through him, the sound of his bones breaking his only indication that he hadn’t already died. Scream after scream rushed over him, yet still it continued until Malachai seemed to disappear before a split second’s flash and blessed unconsciousness.

As Edolie ran, she could feel new cuts form over her arms, face, and legs. She stumbled a few times, but refused to give in to the need to collapse to the forest floor. Suddenly, there was a break in the trees; a clearing. Edolie stopped dead in her tracks and could only stare that the scene before her for several moments. During those moments, every thing seemed to freeze, to have no meaning, and then her brain caught up with what was happening. "Jake!" she screamed and then ran to him, sliding to a stop on her knees beside him. Her hands hovered over him, the sight of him overwhelming, but she could see and somewhat hear his shallow breathing. There were so many injuries that she didn't even know where to start.

Afraid that she would only hurt him more if she touched him, she called out to him, trying to get him to wake up and respond to her. He wouldn’t rouse, but she wasn’t about to leave him there to be eaten by whatever it was that had injured him so badly. It was then that another noise made her jump. She went for her wand, but it wasn’t in her pocket. “Oh, wonderful Ed, get yourself and Jake eaten,” she muttered to herself through her tears. The search for her wand brought her upon another person that she had somehow missed before. He was not very far from Jake at all. She looked at the burned being for a long moment before she recognized him. “Malachai…” she whispered.

Unwilling to believe that Malachai would have caused what had happened to Jake, Edolie went to him; hoping to get some answers and possibly a way for her to go for help, but also know that the two would be safe. “Malachai…what happened?” she asked as she moved to his side.

Malachai's entire body ached, the blood he had taken from Jake, had helped heal him a bit, but he was still very badly burned. He needed to feed...and soon. As he lie still on the ground barely able to breath, he heard someone enter the clearing, though he couldn't tell who it was.It was a female, he could tell from her voice as she murmured to herself. First she went and examined the spineless and now very broken Jake. It was then that a pain ripped through Mal, an aftershock of the burning, and he let out a moan. The woman then came and knelt beside him, she knew he was, he heard a familiar voice speak his name. As Ed leaned over to ask Mal what happened all he could smell was the sweet liquid of life pulsing in her veins. The animal need to survive took over and faster than thought, he had her He had wrapped his arms around her and buried his fangs in her throat. Long were the drafts that he took from her, each bringing more energy to his injured and beaten body. It was only as he felt her heart start to stop that he realized who he held in his arms. "Edolie!!!" he crried out, but it was too late the dark work was done, her heart had stopped.

Mal let the limp lifeless body fall from his arms, all his attention and anger now turned on Jake, who still lay helpless and passed out on the ground next to him. Jake who had started this fight....Jake who had burned him...Jake, who's paranoia had driven Mal to kill one of his only friends. It became more than Malachai could contain, he moved to where jakes body was and lifted the boy off of the ground. "More than one person will meet their end tonight Mr. Alexander!"his last words were almost a yell as he threw jake across the clearing, landing him against a tree, surely breaking his back and what was left of his ribs.

Mal had begun to stalk towards Jake to finish the job, when he felt anothe vampire enter the clearing.

When Katherine entered the forest she immediately knew that something was horribly wrong. She had felt the presence of three and now only two were clear. A malice hung in the air that had nothing to do with the forest itself, she rushed forward, not bothering to dodge the low branches instead pushing them violently out of her way as she rushed to Malachai.

The sight that greeted her once she entered the small clearing was one she had never expected. Edolie lay at her feet, closest to the forest wall. She glimpsed the other one, Jake, flying through the air and hitting a tree. Her eyes shot to the source... Malachai. Shock coursed through her even as she ran forward to stand between the bloodied, and most definitely broken, Jake - his face almost unrecognizable in the blood that had run down into his hair. His left arm and both legs twisted at odd angles indicating they were broken.

Possibilities ran through her mind, what she could to stop the onslaught. One thing clear in her mind, Edolie had no time left. Kat could sense no heartbeat from her. Upon facing Malachai she reached out, both her hands on his shoulders to stop him dead on the spot. Her eyes locked on his for a split second before she lifted him, throwing him to the other side of the clearing. She rushed back to Edolie, pinning Malachai to the ground, her hand on his throat as she held him down, beside the lifeless form as she knelt down.

Conflicting thoughts were running through her mind, yet another vampire, she couldn't leave Edolie to the darkness. What was it to her to have another vampire in the school, it would settle their debt. Lifting her free hand to her mouth Kat slashed her wrist with her fangs and brought it down low over Edolie's mouth letting her blood drip onto Edolie's tongue. There was little hope, Kat had no idea how long Edolie had been dead, and she had no idea of the power held in her blood where such was concerned. All she could do was hope.

Kat's strength and swiftness caught Mal off guard, as she stopped him and in one quick motion he was in the air, then falling hard against the ground, still a bit bewildered from the fire and now this added to the confusion. He opened his eyes and saw the lifeless body of Edolie next to him, great sorrow and anger welled within him, and Mal began to weep. Normally taking a human life was exciting. But this was a person who wanted to be his friend, and who had never done or said a bad thing against him. Now in his time of need, even as she tried to help him, he killed her.

Suddenly his line of sight was broken, and he felt the pain of Kat's hand around his throat. Part of him was afraid that Kat would kill him, she had every right. But the animal part was only concerned with getting free and starting the long healing process. He struggled briefly beneath her grip but it was no use, he hadn't the strength left to get free.

He laid and watched as Kat slit her wrist and fed Edolie from her. Had she gone mad? creating Ed a vampire? Too many of us in one place is never a good thing. He struggled again, this time to try to stop Kat, but that too was impossible. The work done, all he could do was lay there and wait for whatever came next.

One moment Edolie was leaning over Malachai, the next, she was in his arms and could feel her life being drained away. Her first instinct was to fight back, but she didn’t budge him in the least. After the first initial shock of what he was doing to her passed, she calmed and told herself that he simply needed enough for strength. However, when black spots began to form before her eyes and head began to swim, she started to struggle again. “Malachai, stop!” she whispered desperately, but to no avail.

‘This isn’t so bad…’ she thought as eternal darkness started to press down on her. Edolie’s thoughts then went to her brother and father and what they would go through when they found out. This brought about the want to fight back again, but her body did nothing. A deep coldness started to settle in, making it’s way to her bones. ‘Roslin…’ she thought and tried to some how send her love to him and then to her father. She then looked at Jake, who lay there broken and helpless, and she felt that she had failed miserably, that she should have been able to help him. The last thing that passed her mind was a wish that she and Jake could have fixed things first, that their last words hadn’t been cold and cruel. Then there was darkness.

A rush of warmth and an odd pulling sensation began to grow in the complete darkness that had engulfed Edolie. She resisted it at first, having been enjoying the peace that came with the darkness, but thoughts of those she loved and the possibility of being with them again made her give in. Edolie took a shuddering breath and the distinct taste of blood was the first thing she noticed. Her eyes unwillingly opened and she found herself looking up at Katherine Lyons. Bewilderment filled her and all she could do was lay there and stare, not daring to believe what had been done.

Ignoring Malachai's weak attempts at protest Kat kept her bleeding wrist over Edolie's mouth. She looked at Malachai, her eyes showing only anger and a fierceness few saw and lived to tell about. A small sound came from Edolie, causing Kat to look back at her, she drew her wrist away, looking into Edolie's eyes. The change had started, Kat saw it in Edolie's eyes but she could sense it, Edolie's body dying.

Bending down low over Edolie Kat spoke. 'It's almost over, drink what I offer.' She said, once again lifting her wrist to her own mouth to reopen the gash that had started healing and returned it at once to Edolie's mouth pressing her wrist lightly to her lips, the hand wrapped around Malachai's throat tightening slightly. It was the point of no return, he wouldn't stop it, Edolie would suffer for it.

Mal realized that there was nothing he could do to stop Kat once he saw the look in her eye, and also once he heard the moan from Edolie. He ceased to struggle and barely got out the words"I surrender" before the pain overtook him again and he began to moan himself. His skin felt supersensitive, and the slightest touch felt like fiery sandpaper. Kat's grip around his throat sent wave after wave of pain through him. He prayed that if she killed him it would be quick, the pain was becoming to much to bear. He struggled to speak again, looking Kat directly in the eye. "please" was all he was able to get out.

Kat watched Malachai coldly, he had no idea what he'd caused. Kat had vowed never to do it again, and now she'd been forced into it. To endow an enemy with her power, the power she guarded so vigorously. She shivered slightly, but the feeling passed, her focus flickering for a moment before clearing. A disappointment coursed through her at Malachai's apparent loss of control.

Attacking two students, though in his voice she heard regret, regret easily fabricated from the pain Kat knew must be coursing through him, reinforced by the vice grip she had on his neck. 'You don't deserve it.' She said softly, letting go of him, her eyes moving away from him to Edolie again.

Mal felt the release of pressure from around his neck, and immediately was on his feet. The blood he had taken from Edolie had started the healing process and he could already feel his powers coming back. However there was still intense pain every time he moved, his entire body swelled with the pain whenever he breathed. His skin was overly sensitive.

He looked at the scene which lay before him, and he fell to the ground once again, partially in pain, but mostly in grief. Mal never meant for any of this to happen, things had been set in motion tonight that could never be changed. He had all but killed Jake. He HAD killed Edolie, and forced her into Vampirism. Kat would undoubtedly want a piece of him when all was said and done. For the first time since coming to Ascendio, Mal felt alone.

The only thing he could do now is make his way back to his room to sleep and hopefully to heal. He hadn't the strength to help here in any way, except to die. He took one last look at Katherine, in hopes she would understand, and said. "You know where and when to find me"

With that Mal took to the air with all the energy he had left. He was up the castle wall and in his dorm room faster than most could see, albeit not his normal speed.

Edolie gazed at Katherine for a moment, but the blood that started to trickle into her mouth consumed and fogged her mind. It was suddenly all that mattered to her. She grasped at Katherine’s arm, pulling the torn wrist harder against her mouth. Images began to flash through her mind as she greedily swallowed Katherine’s Blood. Images of a large house, a woman and a man whom she knew, just knew, were Katherine’s parents, death and loss, a man standing in a window, a deadly embrace. She saw herself at one point, that fateful night in the forbidden forest, and her brother many other times, and Malachai, and other students that she knew of, but never really knew.

Malachai’s departure was expected and, in some way, wanted, but as he moved away Kat couldn’t help feeling a want for his return. Edolie’s change would be the first since that of Chloe and Kat remembered only too well what had happened to her that night.

As Edolie locked herself to Kat’s wrist, Kat felt that uncomfortably familiar feeling of her blood being drawn out of her. Each swallow reverberating in her pulse, her heart fighting to pump against the death it could never experience.

A moan escaped Kat, her head spinning as Edolie drank. She wouldn’t lose control, Kat forced herself back to the moment, her mind clearing slightly only to be struck yet again by the swoon. Fighting to keep her mind clear Kat started trying to pull her wrist free, the combination of blood loss and the swoon weakening her considerably.

Katherine's struggle to free herself only resulted in exciting Edolie. It was an unfamiliar sort of excitement, the sort that a lioness would get from seeing her prey suddenly bolt. Edolie released Katherine's arm with the odd intent of seizing her again, of getting a better grip. But, when the blood feast ended, a sudden flash of blinding white light filled her eyes and a savage pain shot through every vein. She quickly flung an arm over her eyes in an attempt at shielding herself from it, but the light only burned on within her mind. A moment later, she felt as if the weight of the world had been lifted from her. Then she felt nothing, absolutely nothing and she thought that she had died again. Part of her seemed to be drifting one way, the other being forced back. The white light faded and she had the distinct feel of finality, as if someone had placed a permanent sticking charm on her soul and body.

In the effort to free herself Kat fell back as Edolie released her, her entire form shaking as the shivers ran up her spine. Quickly she sat up, her eyes locked to Edolie, seeing the change finalize itself. Edolie’s skin growing paler and paler. In the moment that Edolie raised her arm Kat felt sure something had gone wrong but a calm quickly settled on Edolie that Kat couldn’t mistake. Slowly she got to her feet closing the short distance between them. ‘Edolie?’

The sound of Katherine speaking her name drew Edolie out of the shock and confusion she was in. Slowly, she lowered her arm from her eyes and looked over at Katherine. She noticed immediately that her eye sight and hearing had sharpened dramatically. In a moment of pure fascination, she looked around in awe, listening to the sounds of the forest that she had never been able to hear before. Her eyes then fell on the sight of Jake's crumpled body at the foot of a tree.

"Jake!" she screamed as she rushed to him. He was even more mangled than he had been before Malachai latched onto her. She realized that Malachai had not been there a moment ago. "Did Malachai go for help?" she called over her shoulder to Katherine as she leaned over Jake, unsure of what to do.

‘Malachai?’ Kat whispered, as if she were caught in a dream. Edolie had already used the power Kat had given her, but there was no realisation. It was the second time she’d found herself faced with Edolie in the forest and both times Kat had experienced more than her fair share of drama. The freakish sight of Edolie using the vampiric speed she now possessed caused Kat to lose all focus as she stared at the woman who had once saved her life, now marred by the one power Kat had that she had fought for.

Edolie looked around at Katherine, whom seemed to be in some other far off world. "Well? Has he?" she ask, her voice brimming over with panic. "Katherine, we have to help him!" Tears started to spill forth as she looked at Katherine, pleading and desperate.

Kat frowned, Edolie’s voice was rising, her (Kat’s) eyes shifted to Jake’s body, the sight of blood covering his face pulling her out of the haze. ‘Why would Malachai help him?’ She asked in answer before stepping forward. Her focus slipped to Edolie again but Kat found herself unable to look at her. Death settling mixed with those tears threatened to send her off again. She cursed Malachai silently that she had been left with it all before kneeling down beside Jake. Listening for his heartbeat. Despite everything he’d been through his heart was strong. No sign of death. Kat stood up, braced herself and looked at Edolie. ‘You need to calm yourself.’ She placed her hands on Edolie’s shoulders. ‘Listen carefully.’ She said, letting go of her and removing her wand. ‘Mobilicorpus.’ She muttered, watching Jake’s unconscious form rising a few feet into the air.

Edolie watched as the spell lifted Jake from the ground and she could have kicked her self for not thinking about it. She rose and started to wipe the tears from her face. When she looked down at her hands, she found them to be streaked with scarlet. She dabbed the corners of her eyes to find that was indeed where the blood had come from. After chocking back a sob Edolie held out her hand and muttered, "Accio Wand." Her most prized possession obeyed and was soon in her hand. "Malachai would help him because he's a fellow student, he's Head Boy, and he's a wonderful person," she said more to try to convince herself than Katherine. The thought of him being the cause of Jake's condition had passed her mind, but she refused to believe it. That wasn't the Malachai she knew.

Kat flashed on Edolie, the bitterness she now felt toward Malachai rising up in her throat. A dark scowl coloured her face. 'Shall I leave you two here then while you wait for the oh so heroic Malachai to come save you?' She asked with a bite in her tone, her voice low and her stare icy as she magically pushed Jake ahead of her to lead him out of the forest. 'Forgetting for one moment that he basically killed you and fucked your boyfriend up so badly he probably won't be doing much of anything for a while!' She added, all the anger she felt toward Malachai coming out. 'Open your eyes, sweet pea, he's not the saint you'd like to believe he is.' Kat sneered, baring her fangs momentarily before stalking away from the clearing with Jake ahead of her. 'Are you coming?'

Edolie stood there as Katherine bellowed at her, hearing exactly what she didn't want to hear. Anger rose up within her, and every ounce of it was tucked away especially for Malachai. What he had done to her, she could forgive and even understood, but what was done to Jake was unforgivable. She gave a start when Katherine asked if she was coming and began walking after her, all the while more tears streamed down her face. Edolie didn't bother wiping them away just yet. Her mind was too occupied with Malachai and his punishment. She knew all too well that no one could be told of what had happened. It would have to be taken care outside of the usual forms of justice.

Kat walked, her breath coming in short bursts as her anger seemed to engulf every thought. She heard the small sounds from Edolie meaning she was still crying, for all that Kat had experienced in love and struggle she couldn't bring herself out of her anger to express anything but the bitterness. Though not Edolie's fault, Kat had always shown a low tolerance to crying if there was no real need. If Edolie had listened to her in the clearing she would know Jake was going to live. Edolie herself had a mountain of abilities both great and terrible, not to mention she'd been handed a new life. To Kat there was no reason to cry. 'Stop it!' She said harshly to Edolie. 'Wipe it off, we're almost at the castle.'

Edolie stopped dead in her tracks, clenched her teeth and took in a deep breath, trying to calm herself. And then she wiped the streaks of blood from her face as best as she could. Lifting her chin and walking a bit higher than usual, she marched onward after Katherine and Jake.
